After visiting my local
Blockbuster I realised just how many games are out there that I need
to play. Worse are the ones I have that I have yet to complete.
Many of the ones I have
are RPG's of the western and JRPG
variety. Only a few RPG's really hook me from beginning to end while
others are games I come back to time and again to push through
another 10 or so hours.
These are the only
games that I find myself leaving to finish at another time. Those few
that did hook me were the Mass Effect trilogy and Final Fantasy XIII,
all of which I completed within the first week of owning them.
That's not to say that
no other RPG can compare with these games, it's just that for me they
haven't. I have in my to be completed list a plethora of games from
east and west:
And that's just for my
Xbox 360, we won't even get started on the hand-held RPG's that I've
started over the years.
A lot of these games
have received high praise and multiple awards and by all rights
should have captured my attention for the whole game. The problem is
that Mass Effect (and KotOR
before it) has spoiled me for a lot of games. I now want a full
narrative with choices and spoken dialogue from both my character/s
and NPC's.
So many new games don't
have this and as such feel dated in my eyes. It's why Skyrim
and Kingdoms
of Amalur don't hold too much appeal for me as they should. But
other types of games don't really suffer from this, though their
stories might not be as solid as most RPG's they also don't require
the same amount of time either so I have fewer games in the non-RPG
category that are incomplete.
What do you think of
RPG's, have you convinced friends to play them when they had major
reluctance (I got a Star Wars fan into them through KotOR and they now
play WoW
religiously)?
Any thoughts on the
direction these games are taking, or do you too have a pile
of games waiting to be played, hit up the comments below.
